Last weekend, I had the absolute pleasure of attending Sailor Moon The Super Live at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles, and let me tell you—it was an insanely magical experience. As a lifelong Sailor Moon fan, getting to witness this live spectacle felt like stepping into a dream woven from nostalgia, stunning stage effects, and a whole lot of love for the 90’s magical girl anime that we all know and love.
Here’s what made the experience so unforgettable:
🌙 A Love Letter to the Original Manga
At the beginning of the show, they paid tribute to the *Sailor Moon* manga flashing them on the big screen center stage. I was instantly transported back to the 6th grade when me and my little green library card would borrow the manga in multiples and read them within a couple of days. It was clear that the production team put immense thought into capturing the essence of the source material to kick off the show.
🌙 Exclusive Merch Worth Every Penny
Let’s be real—one of the best things about being an anime fan as an adult is having the ability to splurge on limited-edition merch. And *Sailor Moon The Super Live* did not disappoint! The show-exclusive trading cards, tote bags, and clothing made me feel like I had experienced something truly special, a fleeting moment in fandom history that I’ll be reminiscing about for years to come.
🌙 A Creative Approach to Subtitles
Because the entire performance was in Japanese, the show had to find innovative ways to engage non-Japanese-speaking audiences. Instead of relying solely on traditional subtitles, they seamlessly integrated them into the stage design, blending them with visual effects for a more immersive experience.
🌙 Bringing Classic Usagi Humor to the Stage
From an entire dance number about Usagi being a crybaby, to Tuxedo Mask’s overly dramatic cape swings, they really brought the humor that we know and love about the anime to the stage.

What Could Have Made It Even Better?
I’ve been on both sides of branded, live experiences. As a consumer, I’ve played mini golf at The Family Guy Experience and the VIP lounge at the Squid Game: The Trials Experience, and as a marketing professional I’ve recommended new interactive elements to the #1 tactile activation experience the bleeding disorder community, The Science Fair by Believe Limited.
It’s only right that I talk about what would have taken the Sailor Moon The Super Live experience to next level:
🍰 Themed Treats for an Extra Touch of Magic
The limited options for theater snacking was a missed opportunity for an increase in profits and collection of user generated content. Imagine if they sold cookies with an edible print frosting of the cast’s faces. Cocktails inspired by Queen Beryl, Tuxedo Mask and the Legendary Silver Crystal? Not only would this have been a fun (and delicious) way to engage fans, but it also could have boosted profits and got the foodies talking.
📸 More Interactive Photo-Ops
Large displays featuring original manga art or life-sized character cutouts would have been a great addition. These would have encouraged fans to spend more time at the venue, share their experiences online, and ultimately create more buzz around the show. Plus, let’s be honest—who wouldn’t want a photo standing next to their favorite Sailor Senshi?

For my fellow nerdy professionals, let this be your reminder: the best way to avoid burnout is by indulging in the things that bring you joy. Whether that’s a live anime show, a new manga release, or simply rewatching your favorite series—make space for your passions.
