Social Media Copywriting for Small Businesses: 4 Essential Tips to Boost Engagement
If you're not a classically trained copywriter but want to grow your nerdy brand with engaging social media copy, this guide is for you.
When I started in social media marketing, I was dubbed the "UGC Queen" because I managed, scheduled, and wrote copy for over 125 clients per month in the multifamily housing industry. But let me tell you—getting to that point was TUFF. Writing engaging copy at scale took quite a bit of practice, searching Google for inspiration, and a heavy reliance on copy banks.
Copywriting is a skill, and there's a reason it's a whole career—it takes time to master.
While having a professional copywriter on your team is ideal, many nerdy small businesses and anime creators don’t have the budget for one. So, we do it ourselves.
Here are four entry-level social media copywriting tips that helped me improve my skills and can help you convert your audience into customers without the use of AI.
1. Use the 3-Pronged Format: Hook, Body, CTA
Your copy should answer three key questions your audience subconsciously asks:
✅ Hook: "Why should I care?"
✅ Body: "What more do I need to know?"
✅ CTA (Call to Action): "What do you want me to do next?"
This structure keeps your content clear, engaging, and action-driven.
2. Stuck on a Hook? Write the CTA First
If you’re struggling with a strong hook, start with the CTA and work backward.
Decide what action you want your audience to take—buy, comment, share—then craft the body and hook that lead them there. Reverse-engineering your copy has made it easier for me to create a compelling post whenever I experience a bit of writer’s block.
3. Leverage SEO Keywords to Get Discovered
Platforms like Pinterest and TikTok prioritize content based on SEO. Using relevant keywords in your captions and descriptions helps the right audience find your posts and gives you a focal point(s) to wrap the remainder of you copy around.
4. Use Trending Language—But Keep It Authentic
Your time spent doom scrolling (ahem, researching) can actually benefit your copywriting. Stay aware of trending topics and slang in your niche, but only use them if they fit your brand voice.
Nobody likes a brand that tries too hard to be "cool." Keep it natural.
In this example, “Tatakae” is a Japanese term for “Fight!” popularized by the iconic anime, Attack on Titan. Paired with the everyday battles of social media marketers and with Ashton Hall’s viral morning routine using Saratoga water, the caption is on trend, ties in to the content above and engages my desired audience.
Final Thoughts
Social media copywriting—especially at scale—is just as challenging as long-form writing. It's an art that many professionals have refined through repetition and study.
If your nerdy business grows, you may eventually hire a pro copywriter and pay them well for their genius. But for now, these tips can help you craft better social media posts and build engagement.
